  • Investigations indicate that illegal fireworks were ignited at a New Year’s Eve gathering.

HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities have arrested a total of 10 individuals in connection with the tragic New Year’s Eve fireworks explosion in Honolulu that resulted in multiple fatalities and serious injuries. The incident, which took place at a gathering in the Aliamanu neighborhood, has drawn significant attention as more arrests are anticipated in the ongoing investigation, according to The Independent.

The devastating explosion occurred shortly after midnight when a lit bundle of aerial fireworks tipped over and ignited additional crates filled with fireworks, leading to a rapid-fire series of blasts. This tragic event claimed the lives of five individuals: three women, one man, and a 3-year-old boy. Many of the injured are currently receiving treatment for their extensive injuries, with some victims facing a prolonged recovery period at specialized burn units, as reported by USA Today.

The most recent arrests include a 32-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, suspected of reckless endangering and causing harm to minors, as they allegedly allowed their children to participate in igniting the fireworks. A 29-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were also taken into custody under similar charges. Previous arrests were made at the beginning of the investigation, which included couples present at the party, leading to inquiries into their roles during the incident.

Authorities seized approximately 500 pounds of unused fireworks related to the case, further complicating the legal proceedings associated with the event. Honolulu police have been intricately examining the evidence, including reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to build a comprehensive case.

The igniting of illegal fireworks has become increasingly common in Hawaii, escalating during the festive season. This incident has prompted significant community concern over safety practices regarding fireworks during holiday celebrations. As the investigation progresses, there will be greater scrutiny on those who participated in the fireworks display according to AP News.

The Honolulu police department is collaborating with the Prosecuting Attorney's office as they determine appropriate charges for those arrested thus far, with more arrests likely in the coming days.
