Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein appeared in court on Wednesday, pleading with Judge Curtis Farber to move his retrial date for several sex crimes to an earlier date due to deteriorating health and harsh conditions at the Rikers Island jail facility. The judge has currently set the retrial to start on April 15, 2025. Weinstein, who is facing multiple serious health issues, including chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes, stated, “I can’t hold on anymore. I’m holding because I want justice for myself and I want this to be over,” according to reports from HuffPost and CNN.
Weinstein, who spoke from a wheelchair, has criticized the prison's conditions, labeling Rikers Island as a “stain” on New York and a place of significant suffering. He noted, "This is something that has to be stopped," reflecting on the experiences of others in custody with him. Despite his appeals, Judge Farber indicated that he cannot expedite the trial due to other scheduling conflicts but agreed to consider starting a week earlier, contingent on mutual agreement among the parties involved.
Weinstein’s legal troubles stem from prior charges, including a previous conviction overturned in April 2024 by the New York Court of Appeals. The court found that the admission of testimony from women who were not part of his case led to a violation of his rights. This retrial will address allegations that he raped an aspiring actor in 2013 and forcibly performed oral sex on a production assistant in 2006, as well as a new charge related to another unreported allegation from 2006, added recently by prosecutors. Weinstein maintains his innocence across all charges.
While facing this trial, Weinstein also continues to serve a 16-year sentence based on a separate conviction in 2022 for rape in California. His health has been a consistent concern during his imprisonment, with his attorneys advocating for improved medical treatment, citing ongoing ailments exacerbated by conditions at the facility. According to AP News, his representative expressed gratitude towards the court for being considerate of Weinstein’s situation, while also expressing confidence in his forthcoming trial outcomes.
