TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Michigan Wolverines showcased a dominant defensive performance, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year's Eve. This marked a significant victory for Michigan, as they have now obtained a three-game winning streak, including two major upsets against rivals Ohio State and Alabama.
The Wolverines' defense was relentless, sacking Alabama's quarterback Jalen Milroe five times and forcing three turnovers throughout the matchup. Dominic Zvada contributed to Michigan's scoring by kicking four field goals and Davis Warren threw a pivotal touchdown pass to Fredrick Moore, which helped build a comfortable lead.
Alabama, which entered the game ranked No. 11, ended their regular season with a record of 9-4, while Michigan concluded at 8-5. Unfortunately for Alabama, this loss signifies the end of their streak of 16 consecutive seasons with double-digit victories. Last year's meeting between these two teams resulted in a College Football Playoff semifinal win for Michigan, further igniting the rivalry.
Milroe had a challenging game, managing to connect on 16 of his 32 passes for 192 yards, and recorded a touchdown but also suffered an interception along with two lost fumbles. This performance came after what began as a problematic first quarter for the Crimson Tide, where they struggled heavily in wet conditions at Raymond James Stadium. At one point, Michigan capitalized on Alabama's missteps, edging out to a 16-0 lead less than five minutes into the second quarter.
Despite Milroe's effort to rally towards the end of the half with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Ouzts, and a subsequent field goal by Graham Nicholson, Michigan maintained composure. Zvada's later 37-yard field goal extended Michigan's lead to 19-10 in the fourth quarter.
Despite Alabama's attempts to narrow the gap, including another field goal from Nicholson to bring the score to 19-13 with less than five minutes remaining, they ultimately turned the ball over on downs as time expired.
Looking ahead, Michigan plans to open their next season at home against New Mexico, while Alabama will face Florida State on the road, with uncertainties looming regarding Milroe's future as he considers the NFL draft.
