KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Joyce Edwards scored 18 points, leading the No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks to a hard-fought 70-63 victory over the No. 18 Tennessee Lady Vols on Monday evening. This win marked the Gamecocks' 15th consecutive victory and extended their dominance in Southeastern Conference play.

The game was a notable occasion for Tennessee's head coach, Kim Caldwell, who made her return to the sidelines just one week after giving birth to her first child, Conor. Caldwell, who was warmly greeted with a standing ovation, remarked, “I definitely wasn’t expecting it. It made coming back worth it.” Caldwell had missed the previous game, an 80-76 loss to No. 7 Texas, and expressed her appreciation for the support of her team and staff during her transition back to coaching, amidst health challenges following childbirth.

The Gamecocks showcased their depth with significant contributions from players like MiLaysia Fulwiley, who added 11 points, alongside 10 points each from Te-Hina Paopao, Chloe Kitts, and Raven Johnson. The Gamecocks built an impressive lead through an 18-1 scoring run that put them ahead 35-26 at halftime. Tennessee, gaining back momentum in the fourth quarter, was led by Ruby Whitehorn, who scored 12 points, while Talaysia Cooper and others struggled with their shooting, especially from beyond the arc.

South Carolina's head coach, Dawn Staley, praised Caldwell's determination to return so quickly after giving birth, stating, “Women have the strength of 10 men.” Her comments were echoed by Caldwell, highlighting the supportive culture she is fostering within her team.

Despite the loss, Tennessee's players noted the inspiring presence of their coach. Senior guard Samara Spencer stated, “We have to give our all for her.” Caldwell is working to reshape the Lady Vols' program, after inheriting a challenging roster situation, and she aims to rebuild while also integrating stellar recruits like the nation’s No. 2 ranked class from her recent recruiting efforts.

With South Carolina's next game against Auburn, and Tennessee facing Missouri, both teams are keen on solidifying their standings as the season progresses. The rematch in the SEC continues to spotlight an evolving dynamic between a burgeoning Tennessee program and the reigning champions, South Carolina.
