Authorities in Thailand have detained David Armitage, the British husband of Lamduan Armitage, a Thai woman whose body was discovered in the Yorkshire Dales over two decades ago. The couple's story has become notorious due to the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death, prompting significant attention from both Thai and UK authorities. Lamduan, originally from Udon Thani in Thailand, was found by hikers in 2004, but it wasn't until 2019 that her identity as the "Lady of the Hills" was confirmed following a family appeal prompted by a BBC report.
On Friday, Armitage, 62, was detained at his residence in Kanchanaburi for allegedly violating his visa terms. Thai immigration officials stated that they plan to revoke his visa as a part of their ongoing investigation into international criminal cooperation in connection with Lamduan's case. South China Morning Post reported that North Yorkshire Police, which is leading the investigation, was already aware of the circumstances surrounding his detention.
With Lamduan’s death categorized as a murder since a cold case team reopened the investigation in 2018, the situation remains tense as Thai authorities prepare potential next steps. Should David Armitage be deported, he would have options regarding his destination, including a possible return to the UK. North Yorkshire Police emphasized their commitment to pursuing clarity in this case, indicating they are prepared to interview Armitage about the investigation once he is returned to British soil, as revealed in a statement from The Guardian.
As of now, the precise cause of Lamduan's death remains undetermined, intensifying the urgency of the investigation. David Armitage has previously denied involvement in his wife’s death, asserting his innocence to the media, including CBS News.
