Kia Issues Recall for Over 80,000 Niro Vehicles Due to Air Bag Deployment Issues

Kia is recalling more than 80,000 of its electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States due to potential airbag and seat belt deployment issues.

This recall affects the Kia Niro, including standard, Niro EV, and PHEV models from 2023-2025, as reported by the CBS News. The issue arises from wiring beneath the front passenger seat, which could become damaged and hinder the proper deployment of essential safety features during a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that improper airbag and seat belt deployment significantly raises the risk of injury in the event of an accident. The automaker discovered the wiring flaw in November 2024 and has not reported any injuries related to this defect among affected vehicles according to USA Today.

Vehicle owners will receive notification letters beginning March 14, 2025, instructing them to bring their vehicles to local dealers for complimentary inspections and repairs. Dealers will inspect, replace, and reroute the floor wiring assembly as necessary, ensuring that wiring covers are also installed as noted by the AP News.

This latest recall follows a prior incident where Kia and its sister company Hyundai recalled over 208,000 electric vehicles due to a separate issue regarding the loss of drive power reported by Newsweek.

For further inquiries, affected vehicle owners can contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or visit nhtsa.gov for more information on recalls.
