The PGA Tour has officially announced the relocation of the Genesis Invitational from its traditional venue at Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, as devastating wildfires continue to affect the Los Angeles area. Originally scheduled for February 13-16, the tournament, which boasts a significant $20 million purse, is set to emphasize relief initiatives for those impacted by the wildfires.

While Riviera Country Club itself remains undamaged, it is situated within neighborhoods severely affected by the ongoing AP News coverage of the fires, which have unfortunately claimed at least 28 lives and led to the destruction of over 14,000 structures across Greater Los Angeles since January 7. “Riviera remains the home of the Genesis Invitational,” said Tiger Woods, the tournament’s host. “We look forward to playing on another championship caliber golf course this year and using the tournament to support those affected by the fires in the Los Angeles area,” he added, expressing gratitude to San Diego for stepping in to host the event.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan stated that the tournament aims to reflect the resilience of Los Angeles and spotlight the ongoing recovery efforts in the region. This year’s Genesis Invitational will mark a significant event for Torrey Pines, which has already hosted the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this month. The infrastructure in place from the prior tournament will further facilitate a smooth experience for both players and spectators alike.

This will be the first time since 1998 that the Genesis Invitational will not be held at Riviera, a historic course known for its rich legacy in the sport and its association with many golf legends, including Jack Nicklaus. Riviera has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments including the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and is slated to return as the tournament's venue in 2026.

"As we've seen the last two weeks, sports can be a great diversion but an even greater unifier," Monahan stated, highlighting the role of sports in bringing communities together during challenging times. The focus on the volunteer and charitable aspects of the event will be paramount as participants come together not just to compete, but to rally support for those affected by the ongoing relief efforts.

PGA Tour enthusiasts and fans across the globe can look forward to this extraordinary event occurring on a course beloved by Woods, known for his previous triumphs at Torrey Pines, including the iconic 2008 U.S. Open victory which he won on effectively a broken leg.
