A woman in California has been arrested following the horrifying discovery of 27 deceased horses across multiple properties. Jan Johnson from Clements was taken into custody on Wednesday, facing charges including animal cruelty, threatening a public official, and possession of a short-barrel shotgun, according to reports from the The Guardian.
The arrest occurred during an operation executed by the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office and animal services, part of an ongoing investigation into animal neglect. Authorities found several malnourished horses that had limited access to food and water, prompting immediate rescue operations.
Animal services officers, alongside veterinarians, assessed the situation, leading to the rescue of 16 horses, which are now under the care of professionals at Oakdale Equine Rescue. Sadly, four horses and one bull had to be euthanized due to severe neglect.
Authorities are still investigating the conditions of the remaining animals on Johnson's properties. The sheriff's office emphasized their commitment to safeguarding animal welfare and ensuring such incidents are thoroughly addressed.
According to SFGate, this is not Johnson's first legal confrontation; she was previously arrested for financial elder abuse in 2006. As the community responds, more than 60 additional horses are expected to reach Oakdale Equine Rescue for rehabilitation.
This troubling case highlights the urgent need for better animal welfare oversight and community support in rehabilitating these abused creatures. For more information about how you can help, consider reaching out to local animal rescue organizations.
