A Manhattan aesthetician, Joey Grant Luther, has been charged with multiple crimes, including wire fraud and smuggling, involving the injection of counterfeit Botox into unsuspecting clients. Announced by federal authorities, the charges stem from serious health complications reported by clients after receiving treatments at his spa, JGL Aesthetics, located in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City. Luther, aged 54, was found to have illegally purchased counterfeit Botox from sources in Asia, particularly China, and injected it into clients without the necessary medical licenses according to the New York Times.
Clients reported life-threatening symptoms, including botulism, impaired vision, and slurred speech, with some being hospitalized for urgent medical care. U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon emphasized the severity of Luther's actions, noting that he assured clients that the counterfeit product was genuine and attempted to downplay any side effects. "Luther's disregard for the health of his clients put all of his victims in harm's way," Sassoon stated per AP News.
Though Luther was released on a $100,000 bail, he faces significant consequences if convicted, including possible imprisonment of up to 20 years. The criminal investigation uncovered that he kept operating his spa even after clients began to report adverse effects, with evidence suggesting that more than 700 Botox-related services had been administered since 2021 as reported by ABC News.
This case highlights the ongoing issues with counterfeit medical products in the beauty industry, spurring a broader investigation by the CDC and FDA into similar incidents across the United States, where numerous individuals have suffered adverse reactions to unverified cosmetic treatments.
