NEW DELHI – Tragedy struck on Wednesday as at least 12 train passengers were killed in western India after jumping onto the tracks in a panic over a rumored fire incident. The deadly accident occurred near the Pardhade railroad station in Maharashtra, approximately 410 kilometers (255 miles) southwest of Mumbai, India's financial hub.

According to the Press Trust of India, the incident began aboard the Pushpak Express train, which halted after some passengers pulled the emergency chain in response to reported sparks emanating from one of its coaches. The sparks were attributed to either a 'hot axle' or 'brake-binding' issues, prompting fears of a fire.

In the ensuing chaos, passengers exited the train and were tragically struck by the Karnataka Express, which happened to be passing on the adjacent track. Reports indicate that at least six additional individuals suffered injuries and were subsequently hospitalized. Police officer Dattatraya Karale confirmed this to PTI, stating, "Some passengers panicked and jumped down onto the tracks."

Despite ongoing efforts by the government to enhance rail safety, train accidents remain a persistent issue in India, home to the world's largest railway network. Such incidents have drawn significant attention, especially following a major crash in 2023, which left over 280 fatalities in the eastern part of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently emphasized the modernization of this ancient railway system as India grapples with becoming the world's most populous nation, now with a population exceeding 1.42 billion.
