North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to solidifying its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia in a New Year letter addressed to President Vladimir Putin. This announcement, reported by state media SCMP, highlights the strengthening ties between the two countries.
In his message, Kim extended greetings to Putin, the Russian populace, and military personnel, expressing a desire to elevate their bilateral relations further. He noted, “the New Year 2025 would be recorded as the first year of victory in the 21st century,” hoping that Russia would triumph over what he termed “neo-Nazism” in Ukraine (Reuters).
The two leaders previously signed a mutual defense treaty during a summit in June, obligating each nation to assist the other in the event of conflict. In a significant move, North Korea has dispatched over 10,000 troops to support Russian efforts in Ukraine, with intelligence sources reporting substantial casualties among North Korean forces (Al Jazeera).
Kim concluded his letter expressing hope for "greater success" in Putin's leadership and wishing for the prosperity and well-being of the Russian people as they embark on new collaborative projects in 2024.
