Country music star Billy Ray Cyrus experienced a tumultuous performance on stage at the Liberty Ball celebrating Donald Trump’s inauguration, as he grappled with a series of technical difficulties. During the event, which took place on Monday night, Cyrus performed solo while the music video for his collaboration with Lil Nas X, “Old Town Road,” played behind him. When the video concluded, he attempted to engage the crowd by singing along and strumming his guitar, but soon faced complications that disrupted the performance.
Cyrus described his experience to People, stating, "I wouldn't have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not." Despite the robust complications, including a lost connection to his guitar, he attempted to maintain the show’s momentum by encouraging the audience, saying, “If you encourage me, I’ll keep going.” Yet, the performance was riddled with challenges, including a sudden loss of his guitar’s sound when he beckoned for assistance, asking the tech crew, “Is anybody awake? Where’s everybody at?”
Amid escalating technical issues, he briefly shifted to an a cappella rendition of his hit song, “Achy Breaky Heart.” His efforts to entertain were met with a mix of admiration and ridicule online, as some viewers commented that the chaotic display symbolized the unpredictability of the incoming administration.
Despite the challenges, Cyrus maintained a positive spirit, reflecting on his performance by stating, “I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock ‘n’ roll!” His philosophy on enduring through technical challenges resonated with many, particularly after witnessing fellow performer Carrie Underwood face similar issues earlier that day.
