Harvard University has reached a settlement in two lawsuits alleging widespread antisemitism on its campus, ensuring greater protections for Jewish students. The legal actions came from the Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and Students Against Antisemitism, which accused the prestigious university of fostering a hostile environment for Jewish individuals.

As part of the settlement on January 21, 2025, Harvard agreed to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This includes the incorporation of specific examples to better illustrate what constitutes discriminatory or harassing behavior, particularly actions targeting Zionism or individual Jews. Harvard's spokesperson emphasized, "We are committed to ensuring our Jewish community is embraced, respected and can thrive at Harvard."

Furthermore, Harvard plans to enhance its policies by updating frequently asked questions on its website, delivering annual reports for five years on the enforcement of its nondiscrimination policies, and providing specialized training for staff managing discrimination complaints. These measures aim to ensure that violations against Jewish students, particularly those expressing support for Israel, are addressed adequately.

Attorneys representing the plaintiffs expressed confidence in the university's commitment to protecting Jewish students. Marc Kasowitz, counsel for Students Against Antisemitism, remarked, “That gives us confidence that these measures are going to be very, very protective of the interests and rights of Jewish students on the Harvard campus.”

The litigation followed heightened tensions at universities across the United States, particularly after the Israel-Hamas conflict that began in October 2023, which prompted an upsurge in campus activism and protests. Plaintiffs asserted that Jewish students faced hostility and discrimination, including derogatory labels and accusations during protests.

In addition to the reforms mandated by the settlements, Harvard is working on a partnership with a university in Israel, a point likely to provoke reaction from pro-Palestinian advocates. Despite the settlements, Harvard did not admit any wrongdoing, and the terms of the agreements remain undisclosed.

As Harvard embarks on these changes, Jewish students express hope that the university's renewed policies will culminate in a safer, more inclusive environment, allowing them to participate freely in campus life without fear of discrimination or harassment.
