On Monday, Joe Biden concluded an impressive over 50-year political career, bidding farewell to the presidency while asserting, “we’re not leaving the fight.” As he departed for California to spend time with his family, Biden reflected on his legacy while witnessing his successor, Republican President Donald Trump, promising during his inaugural address to “completely and totally reverse” Biden’s policies.

The day began with Biden and his wife Jill welcoming Trump and his wife Melania for a traditional Inauguration Day tea at the White House. Biden greeted Trump with “Welcome home,” a gesture contrasting with the animosity that marked their previous encounters. Following the ceremony, the two rivals—a history of political rivalry notwithstanding—traveled together to the Capitol where Trump was sworn in as the 47th president.

During his inaugural remarks, Trump proclaimed, “Our recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal,” referring to Biden’s administration. Meanwhile, Biden maintained a composed demeanor as he sat in the front row. As the transition unfolded, the White House staff began the task of clearing out Biden's belongings, preparing for the new administration, including redecorating the Oval Office for Trump.

After Trump finished his address, Biden and the first lady were escorted outside to a waiting Marine helicopter, which would transport them to Joint Base Andrews for a farewell event. In a heartfelt address to his staff, Biden expressed, “We couldn’t have done anything we did without you. No president gets to choose the moment they enter history, but they get to choose the team they enter history with, and we chose the best damn team in the world.”

Despite the political shift, Biden remained optimistic, telling his team that it is important to regain strength quickly during challenging times. “We’re leaving office. We’re not leaving the fight,” he urged, encouraging continued engagement in political matters. In a light-hearted moment, Biden joked about Trump's speech, saying, “We heard the inaugural address today. We got a lot more to do,” as laughter filled the air.

After his remarks, Biden and the first lady walked towards the Air Force plane that had been a staple of his presidency, embarking on their flight to Santa Ynez, California, signifying a new chapter for the former president as he transitions into private life.
