The Taliban government has officially announced the release of Afghan prisoner Khan Mohammad, detained in the United States, in a landmark prisoner exchange with American detainees. This agreement was facilitated by Qatar, which played an effective role in the negotiations. According to the Afghan foreign ministry, Mohammad had been serving a life sentence in California after being arrested nearly two decades ago in Afghanistan's Nangarhar province. While the statement confirmed the exchange, it did not disclose how many American prisoners were involved.
This announcement came just a day after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, whose administration previously negotiated terms that led to the US military's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 and the Taliban's return to power. The Taliban expressed optimism about a “new chapter” in relations with the United States following Trump's election victory.
The Afghan government characterized the prisoner exchange as a positive outcome stemming from diplomatic dialogue, extending gratitude to Qatar for its crucial involvement in facilitating the agreement. The statement highlighted that the Islamic Emirate perceives the actions of the United States favorably, viewing them as steps towards the normalization and enhancement of bilateral relations.
