NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In a thrilling display of determination, CJ McCollum scored 45 points, leading the New Orleans Pelicans to a historic 25-point comeback win against the Utah Jazz, finishing 123-119 after overtime on Monday night. This remarkable feat marks the largest comeback in Pelicans' franchise history.
Despite missing key players due to injuries and illness, including Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans managed to turn the game around with a spirited performance. McCollum's key contributions included six points in overtime, while teammate Dejounte Murray recorded 26 points and 11 assists, narrowly missing a triple-double. “Huge credit to our guys in the locker room pulling together,” said Pelicans coach Willie Green, reflecting on the team's resilience.
The Pelicans' incredible effort saw them overcome a 25-point deficit, fueled by a decisive 24-3 run that turned the tide in the second half. Although the Jazz initially dominated the game, building a lead as large as 22 points, McCollum's clutch shooting in the latter stages of regulation kept the Pelicans alive for the overtime period.
Keyonte George led the Jazz with 23 points, while Walker Kessler contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds. Despite out-rebounding the Pelicans 63-45 and taking advantage of their size in the paint, the Jazz could not secure the win.
“We were missing some guys who rebound the ball well,” McCollum noted, acknowledging the challenges faced due to player absences. “Sometimes, it’s not Xs and Os. It’s Jimmies and Joes.” As the Pelicans continue their quest for a postseason berth, they have found a renewed spark, winning four of their last five games.
Next, New Orleans is set to face the Milwaukee Bucks, with hopes of continuing this upward trend as they build momentum from this significant victory.
