Olympic slalom champion Petra Vlhova will be absent from the Alpine skiing world championships next month in Austria due to a setback in her recovery from a knee injury sustained a year ago. After tearing her ACL during a World Cup giant slalom in her native Slovakia, Vlhova has not participated in races since. Her coach Mauro Pini stated that “unfortunately, the setbacks she faced in December and January have made it impossible for her to participate in the world championships in Saalbach” according to AP.
The 29-year-old skier has a commendable record, with five career medals at the biennial championships, including a giant slalom gold won in 2019. The injury has shifted her focus towards the upcoming Winter Olympics in Cortina in 2026, where she will aim for a fourth Olympic appearance. Pini also noted, “Petra’s knee rehabilitation is finally on the right track, with encouraging progress every day.” Despite forgoing the world championships, Vlhova holds a strong competitive spirit for future events.
With this decision, Vlhova’s streak of six consecutive world championships will come to an end. Fellow competitor Mikaela Shiffrin also faces uncertainty regarding her participation in the upcoming event due to recovering from abdominal surgery, which raises questions about the rivalry reported by Reuters.
