Jimmy Carter, who passed away at age 100, emphasized a “bond of our common humanity” in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance.
He played a pivotal role in establishing diplomatic relations between the US and China, particularly during Deng Xiaoping's 1979 visit.
Despite facing criticism, Carter prioritized normalizing ties with Beijing while also maintaining non-official relations with Taiwan.
His post-presidency work as a peacemaker highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections in global diplomacy.
Carter's death serves as a reminder of the need for political will and wisdom to navigate the current tensions in China-US relations.
