Pope Francis has called for a ceasefire in Gaza to be "immediately respected", emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid and the return of hostages. This appeal comes shortly after the initiation of a truce between Israel and Hamas, during which the pontiff expressed gratitude to the involved mediators. "Thanks to all the parties involved in this important outcome. I hope that, as agreed, it will be immediately respected by the parties and that all the hostages will finally be able to go home to hug their loved ones again," he stated Times of India, VOA News.

While praying for the safe return of hostages, Pope Francis urged for a swift increase in humanitarian aid directed toward the people of Gaza, stating, "who have so many urgent needs". He highlighted the necessity for both Israelis and Palestinians to experience "clear signs of hope", advocating for a two-state solution aided by the international community.

This truce, encompassing the return of 33 hostages seized during Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, marks a significant step amid over 15 months of conflict, described as the deadliest in Israeli history. The agreed terms also include the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails, a deal facilitated by negotiators from Qatar, the United States, and Egypt after extensive talks.

May everyone say yes to dialogue, yes to reconciliation, yes to peace, the Pope concluded, underlining the ongoing need for peaceful resolutions to the conflict.
