In a tragic incident at Keri plateau in Goa on Saturday evening, a paragliding accident resulted in the deaths of a woman tourist from Maharashtra and a paraglider operator from Nepal. The deceased have been identified as 27-year-old Shivani Dabale and 26-year-old Suman Nepali. The accident occurred when the rope of the paraglider snapped, causing them to crash into rocky terrain between 4:30 PM and 5 PM. Despite immediate medical assistance and their transport to Goa Medical College, both victims were declared dead upon arrival, as reported by India Times.

In light of the event, Goa police have arrested Shekhar Raizada, the owner of the Hike 'n' Fly paragliding company. He is facing charges for culpable homicide due to his alleged negligence in allowing his paragliding pilot to operate without the necessary permissions and valid licenses. Mandrem police registered a case under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses culpable homicide not amounting to murder. According to official statements, Raizada knowingly put the lives of the tourists in danger to maintain the business.

Further inquiries revealed that the local MLA Jit Arolkar has urged the tourism department to halt paragliding activities in the area, stressing that it poses significant risks to those participating. He noted that this sentiment has been echoed by the Keri panchayat, which has taken steps towards imposing restrictions on such activities.

This tragic incident raises serious questions regarding the safety measures associated with adventure sports in Goa, an area popular among tourists for such activities.
