NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya has deployed an additional 217 police officers to Haiti as part of a multinational force aimed at addressing the severe gang violence plaguing the Caribbean nation. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen announced the officers' departure from Kenya on Friday and emphasized the mission's significant progress in reducing violence, which has drawn global recognition.
Murkomen confirmed, “The Kenya-led mission has made tremendous progress in reducing gang violence, earning praise across the globe.” He expressed the nation's unwavering commitment to this historic mission, which began in June with an initial troop deployment. With the latest addition, Kenya has now sent over 600 police officers to Haiti, with plans for a total of 1,000 as part of a UN-backed initiative.
Gang-related conflicts have displaced more than 700,000 people in Haiti, forcing many into makeshift shelters lacking proper sanitation. In a worrying trend, reports indicate that over 5,600 people were murdered last year alone, marking an increase of over 20% from 2022. According to the U.N. Human Rights Office, this violence also resulted in more than 2,200 injuries and nearly 1,500 kidnappings.
Kenya's mission underscores the ongoing challenges facing Haiti, as the nation struggles with widespread insecurity and humanitarian crises fueled by gang violence.
