KOLKATA: In a significant development in the RG Kar rape-murder case, a local court has convicted Sanjay Roy, an accused civic volunteer, for the brutal assault and murder of a doctor trainee at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court's judgment was delivered by Judge Anirban Das after a lengthy investigation and trial that lasted over 162 days since the horrifying incident occurred on August 9.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case from local police on August 13, asserted its confidence in securing a conviction based on substantial evidence presented during the trial. Witness testimonies, biological samples affirming a match to Roy, and corroborative reports from a multi-institutional medical board confirmed the primary details of the crime, with the court labeling it as a "rarest of rare" event.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution highlighted significant findings that included DNA samples, viscera, and toxicology reports, which strongly indicated Roy's involvement. Among the details, it was revealed that the doctor had put up a fierce struggle, evidenced by five blunt-force injuries found on Roy’s body that suggested a violent altercation. Furthermore, a clump of hair, abandoned belongings, and technology retracing from the crime scene linked Roy directly to the crime.
Roy, who pleaded not guilty and claimed his innocence, stated in court, "I have been falsely implicated; those who have done so are being let go." His defense argued the improbability of conducting such a heinous act unnoticed given the surveillance infrastructure in the area, yet the court found the CBI’s arguments compelling enough to issue the guilty verdict.
The court will announce the quantum of punishment on Monday, closing in on a case that has captured public attention and stirred conversations around safety and accountability in medical institutions. The victim's identity remains undisclosed in accordance with Supreme Court directives aimed at protecting victims of sexual assault.
