Sai Varshith Kandula, a 20-year-old residing in St. Louis, Missouri, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison by a US district court on Thursday for his attempted attack against the White House on May 22, 2023. The court revealed that Kandula's motive was to overthrow the democratically elected government and establish a dictatorship driven by Nazi ideology. This sentence follows claims made by Kandula himself during the investigation, where he indicated that he would have "arranged for the killing of the US president and others if necessary" to achieve his goals ([BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c87ddew5z8eo)).
Initially flying from St. Louis to Washington, D.C., Kandula rented a truck shortly after landing. At approximately 9:35 PM, he drove the vehicle onto the sidewalk and crashed it into security barriers near the White House, sending pedestrians fleeing in panic. Eyewitness accounts described the moment as chaotic, during which the truck reversed before colliding with the barriers a second time, disabling the vehicle and causing it to leak fluids. Kandula exited the truck waving a Nazi flag and was promptly arrested by US Secret Service officers at the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the crash ([India Times](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/us/intent-was-to-replace-govt-indian-national-gets-8-yrs-for-white-house-attack-plot/articleshow/117316941.cms)).
The Department of Justice reported that Kandula had meticulously planned the attack for weeks, including attempts to secure a heavier vehicle and access to armed security. On April 22, he reached out to a security company requesting 25 armed guards alongside an armored convoy. By May 4, Kandula attempted to rent alternative vehicles but was ultimately unsuccessful. Following these unsuccessful attempts, he resorted to renting a smaller truck for his plan, resulting in damages estimated at $4,322 to the National Park Service ([India Times](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/hyderabad-native-sentenced-to-8-years-in-u-s-for-attempted-white-house-attack-with-nazi-ideology-motive-/articleshow/117325783.cms)).
Concluding the proceedings, US District Judge Dabney Friedrich imposed not only the prison term but also ordered Kandula to undergo three years of supervised release following his prison sentence. The case has raised severe public concern regarding security protocols around significant government buildings and the potential for politically motivated violence in the U.S.
