In a strong rebuke, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Elon Musk’s backing of the far-right, particularly the Alternative for Germany (AfD), poses a significant threat to democracy in Europe. Speaking on January 17, Scholz referred to Musk's actions as "completely unacceptable," highlighting the potential repercussions for democratic governance across the continent. Scholz noted, "He supports the far right across Europe – in the UK, Germany, and many other countries," adding that such endorsements endanger Europe's democratic development.
Musk’s recent interactions include a livestream with AfD candidate Alice Weidel, drastically increasing the party's visibility as Germany heads towards snap elections on February 23. Scholz maintained that while it is normal for a billionaire to express his views, Musk's support for extreme political factions, whether motivated by business interests or personal beliefs, is unacceptable. He emphasized that the future of Germany should not be determined by influential social media owners but rather by its electorate.
The backlash against Musk's stance has intensified across Europe, with a growing chorus of political leaders expressing concern. EU lawmakers have conveyed "deep concern" regarding Musk’s political meddling in a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The situation underscores a broader apprehension among European officials about the impact of billionaire influence on political discourse and democratic structures.
As the AfD gains traction in polls, with around 20% support, Scholz and other leaders remain vigilant against what they see as threats to their political integrity. Center-right opposition leader Friedrich Merz also condemned Musk's endorsements, expressing solidarity with Scholz's stance on this pressing issue.
