Most federal employees will receive a day off on January 9 in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100. This announcement was made by President Joe Biden on Monday following Carter's death on Sunday in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. In his executive order, Biden designated this day as a national day of mourning to pay respect to the 39th president, who served from 1977 to 1981. All flags are to be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days as a mark of respect for Carter.

On January 9, all federal offices will be closed, according to Biden's executive order. However, specific offices may remain open if their heads determine it's necessary for issues related to national security or other public needs. In addition to federal offices, trading will cease on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq that day, confirming a long-held tradition of pausing trading in reaction to a former president's passing. This marks the first closure of the NYSE for a presidential death since George H. W. Bush in December 2018.

The Supreme Court will also close its doors on January 9, as ordered by Chief Justice John Roberts. While there were no scheduled sessions for that day, the court will convene the following day for significant cases. Although many federal services will be closed, it’s important to note that private businesses and banks are not mandated to observe the day, and operations will vary across the nation.

The last national day of mourning took place when George H. W. Bush passed away, prompting similar closures across various sectors, including the U.S. Postal Service, which is also expected to shutter on January 9.
