SpaceX's ambitious launch of its Starship rocket on January 16, 2025, marked another significant step in the company's journey towards creating a fully reusable launch system. There, mechanical arms—nicknamed "chopsticks," successfully caught the booster stage, marking the second successful recovery of this kind after a previous test in October 2023.
Despite the successful recovery of the booster, the fate of the Starship vehicle took a downturn when telemetry indicated that several engines failed during the ascent, leading to loss of communication. As a consequence, debris was reported falling across the Caribbean, triggering brief alerts from the FAA regarding airspace safety in Florida due to the risk of falling parts.
