NASA Astronaut Suni Williams Breaks Seven-Month Silence with First Spacewalk

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — After spending more than seven months aboard the International Space Station, NASA astronaut Suni Williams made a much-anticipated return to action on Thursday, stepping out for her first spacewalk. Accompanied by fellow astronaut Nick Hague, Williams tackled critical outdoor repairs as the station orbited approximately 260 miles (420 kilometers) above Turkmenistan. “I’m coming out,” Williams announced via radio as she prepared to make her exit.

Williams' return to extravehicular activity (EVA) comes on the heels of significant delays. She and Butch Wilmore launched aboard Boeing’s new Starliner capsule last June, originally intended for a one-week test flight. However, issues with the Starliner led NASA to order the capsule's return without crew, postponing their homecoming to potentially late March or early April—nearly ten months after liftoff.

This event marks the first EVA for NASA astronauts since a spacewalk was aborted last summer due to a water leak in an airlock linked to a cooling loop malfunction. NASA has since confirmed that the issue has been resolved, allowing Williams to complete her eighth spacewalk overall. Having previously lived on the ISS, she brings extensive experience to this critical mission.
