**NEW YORK (AP/SCMP)** — Tourists hoping to capture the perfect photo atop Carrie Bradshaw's famed steps from Sex and the City will soon need to think again. The Landmarks Preservation Commission in New York City has given the green light for a gate installation at the brownstone owned by Barbara Lorber since 1978. Lorber expressed her frustration regarding "the endless presence of interest in my celebrity staircase" during the commission meeting.
The brownstone, a notable fixture in Greenwich Village's historic district, was used for exterior scenes featuring Carrie, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker. "I’d hoped for literally decades that this would pass," Lorber shared, highlighting her prolonged battle against the disruptive tourist influx. Her current approach of chaining off the stoop with a "no trespassing" sign has proven ineffective, with neighbors commenting on the persistent foot traffic and noise generated by devoted fans of the show.
The commission's approval, backed by eight members, paves the way for an architect to collaborate on a final gate design. This historic site, while a beloved destination for fans of the series, is now subject to changes aimed at preserving the residents' quality of life. The show, which aired for six successful seasons starting in 1998, chronicled the lives and relationships of Bradshaw and her best friends. Despite the show's setting, the real-life location of the brownstone differs significantly from the character's fictional home on the Upper East Side, located quite far from its filming site.
Tourist reactions reveal mixed feelings, as Anthony Gillbee from Melbourne reflected, "it’s an iconic venue... but, you know, putting a gate at the front would change the whole appearance of it." For devoted fans, the charm of Carrie Bradshaw’s residence may forever be altered once the gate is installed, but the community is hopeful that it could diminish the incessant tourist congestion.
