HONOLULU — An influx of visitors has descended upon Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as they seek to experience the mesmerizing fountaining lava from the Kilauea volcano. The eruption, which began on December 23, has seen sporadic activity but resumed on Wednesday, intensifying from a “small sluggish lava flow” to an impressive fountain reaching approximately 200 feet (60 meters) high, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
By Wednesday afternoon, park visitors could witness two distinct lava fountains from designated overlooks. There are expectations that the height of the fountains may continue to rise as more gas-rich lava erupts. “The park is already very busy with people eager to see the eruption and we expect visitation to increase as the news gets out again,” stated Jessica Ferracane, a park spokesperson.
The national park is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. This spectacular eruption can be viewed from numerous public overlooks within the park, and currently, there is no danger posed to nearby homes or infrastructure.
As word spreads, the anticipation of witnessing this natural phenomenon continues to draw crowds.
