In a recent civil lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, former UFC champion Conor McGregor faces serious accusations from a 49-year-old woman who claims she was a victim of sexual assault during an NBA Finals game on June 9, 2023. The plaintiff, described as a senior vice president at a prominent Wall Street financial firm, asserts that the incident transpired in a men's restroom at the Kaseya Center in Miami, where she alleges McGregor sexually assaulted her after being led there by one of his associates.
The lawsuit claims that security personnel at the Kaseya Center were aware of McGregor's conduct, yet failed to provide adequate protection for the plaintiff, who is referred to as Jane Doe throughout the legal documents. Her attorney, James Dunn, stated that “after criminal charges were rejected, a civil case is the only avenue that my client has to seek justice in this case” and emphasized her desire to raise awareness regarding sexual assault.
Allegations stemming from the incident claim that arena staff continued to serve McGregor alcohol, even as he exhibited signs of intoxication, which the plaintiff’s representatives argue contributed to the situation. In a statement to the media, Dunn expressed concerns regarding the repercussions this lawsuit could have on her career, highlighting her commendable motivation to encourage the reporting of such incidents.
While McGregor's legal team has branded the accusations as “false,” citing a previous investigation that found no grounds for criminal charges, the case is poised to attract significant attention. Miami-Dade State Attorney reflected in their closeout memo that witnesses indicated the plaintiff did not exhibit “signs of distress” following the purported assault and had subsequently returned to socializing after the alleged event, which included a promotional stunt involving McGregor and the Miami Heat’s mascot, Burnie.
Seeking damages exceeding $75,000, the suit aims to hold accountable not only McGregor but also the entities operating the Kaseya Center, including Basketball Properties LLC and Compass Group USA, for their alleged negligence. In November, McGregor faced similar circumstances in a civil court in Ireland, where a jury awarded a victim €250,000 after she claimed to have been raped and assaulted by him.
CNN has reached out to the Miami Heat organization and the operators of the arena for comments, but responses have not yet been provided regarding the ongoing litigation. The unfolding situation remains a focal point of public interest as both parties prepare for a legal battle over these grave allegations.
