LONDON — The BAFTA Film Awards nominations for 2025 have been announced, with the papal thriller “Conclave” leading the pack, receiving 12 nominations, just ahead of the genre-defying trans musical “Emilia Pérez”, which garnered 11 nominations. The air of anticipation surrounding the nominations was overshadowed by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, leading BAFTA chair Sara Putt to express her thoughts on the devastating situation, stating, “We are very much thinking of our colleagues, friends, community over there” (AP News).
Despite these challenges, the BAFTA nominations showcased a diverse range of films and talents. The best film category includes “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “Anora”. Notably, “The Brutalist”, featuring Adrien Brody, earned nine nominations, including best actor for Brody’s impressive performance (Time).
In her remarks about the nominations, Putt emphasized the variety of genres, noting that “six different genres were represented on the best film list this year.” She also highlighted that 14 of the 24 nominations in the acting categories were recognized for the first time, suggesting a promising generation of talent making their mark. The spotlight will particularly shine on the best actress category, where the winner will be a first-time BAFTA victor (BBC).
The nominations further included remarkable performances from stars like Ralph Fiennes, nominated for his role in “Conclave,” as well as Timothée Chalamet for “A Complete Unknown.” The competition in the leading actor category is fierce, including Hugh Grant, Colman Domingo, and others (AP News).
The ceremony will take place on February 16, providing a high-profile run-up to the Oscars set for March 3.
