As the proposed ban on TikTok approaches, the Chinese app RedNote, known as Xiaohongshu, has witnessed a remarkable influx of over 500,000 new users in the United States within just a week. This user surge reflects apprehension amongst TikTok creators, especially with a looming deadline for the app to divest from its Chinese ownership by January 19, or face removal from U.S. app stores due to national security concerns. The controversial TikTok, used by approximately 170 million Americans, has been heavily criticized for its ties to Chinese owner ByteDance, leading to heightened scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers and the public alike.
This spike in user registration for RedNote coincides with increased online searches for "learn Mandarin." According to Google Trends, searches for the term surged from a value of 25 to a peak of 100 within a span of a week, indicating growing interest in the platform as users transition from TikTok. Hawaii, California, and New York are among the top states in the United States with heightened curiosity in Mandarin language learning, reflecting the changing social media landscape as “TikTok refugees” seek new virtual spaces.
Social media enthusiasts have noted that RedNote mirrors TikTok through its short-form video content, while incorporating features reminiscent of Pinterest. The application facilitates sharing lifestyle content, product reviews, and user experiences but predominantly serves content in Mandarin, prompting users to navigate a new language. Reports indicate that this has prompted many to engage in Mandarin learning, with interest in the term "RedNote" reflecting a staggering 4,400 percent increase on Google.
Nevertheless, questions persist regarding RedNote's data privacy measures and moderation practices. Previously reported issues have emerged around content restrictions, particularly concerning LGBTQ+ content. This contrasts sharply with TikTok's global operations divided into separate international and domestic platforms. As the regulatory landscape intensifies, TikTok continues to advocate against the ban by emphasizing the importance of free speech, while also urging legislative action to postpone the January deadline.
With barely days left before the anticipated TikTok removal, the balance of power in social media continues to shift, creating opportunities for emerging platforms like RedNote. The ongoing discussions surrounding national security, data privacy, and user adaptability underscore the evolving dynamics in the digital space.
