  • President Biden spoke to the families of three Americans detained in Afghanistan since 2022.
  • The detainees include Ryan Corbett, Mahmood Habibi, and George Glezmann, who were captured amid the chaos following the U.S. withdrawal.
  • The Biden administration is negotiating a potential prisoner exchange involving a high-profile detainee from Guantanamo Bay.
  • The Taliban denies holding Mahmood Habibi but is in discussions for a possible deal.
  • Biden's administration has successfully brought home over 75 Americans unjustly detained worldwide.

U.S. President Joe Biden communicated with the families of three Americans, Ryan Corbett, Mahmood Habibi, and George Glezmann, who have been detained in Afghanistan since 2022. During the call, he emphasized his unwavering commitment to bringing home Americans wrongfully held overseas, according to a statement from the White House.

The Biden administration has been in negotiations with the Taliban regarding a U.S. proposal that aims to exchange these three detainees for Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani, a prominent prisoner currently at Guantanamo Bay. This initiative has been ongoing since at least July, as reported by SCMP.

Corbett and Habibi were detained during separate incidents in August 2022, following the Taliban's takeover of Kabul. Glezmann was detained a few months later while visiting as a tourist. Ahmad Habibi, brother of Mahmood, expressed his appreciation for Biden’s assurance during the family call, stating, “President Biden was very clear in telling us that he would not trade Rahim if the Taliban do not let my brother go. He said he would not leave him behind. My family is very grateful that he is standing up for my brother.”

The Taliban, which has denied holding Habibi, presented a counterproposal offering to exchange Glezmann and Corbett for Rahim and two additional individuals. As the negotiations progress, a source familiar with the matter indicated that efforts to secure their release are ongoing.

Biden's administration has so far managed to bring more than 75 Americans back from unjust detentions globally, including cases from Myanmar, China, Gaza, Haiti, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela. The administration has also emphasized its commitment to reuniting families by working closely with key allies.

A Senate intelligence report highlights Rahim's background, labeling him an "al-Qaeda facilitator." He was arrested in Pakistan in mid-2007, rendered to the CIA, subjected to harsh interrogation techniques, and subsequently held at Guantanamo Bay starting in March 2008.

In recent developments, Biden facilitated the transfer of 11 Guantanamo detainees to Oman, further reducing the prison population in Cuba as part of ongoing efforts to close the facility before his upcoming exit from office.

On a related note, Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat confirmed discussions with the U.S. regarding a possible prisoner swap, acknowledging several rounds of talks but noting that no agreement has been finalized.
