A social media post shared by Vice President Kamala Harris regarding the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter has drawn significant attention due to the absence of President-elect Donald J. Trump from the photo. The funeral took place on January 9, 2025, at the Washington National Cathedral, attended by five living former presidents, alongside numerous dignitaries.
In the image posted on Harris' official accounts, the New York Times reports that she prominently featured President Joe Biden and former Presidents Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush, all with their hands over their hearts in tribute. Interestingly, Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, were positioned next to Obama but were left out of the frame, obscured by a pillar and photographer's angle.
Harris captioned the photo with a heartfelt message reflecting on Carter’s legacy: “President Jimmy Carter loved our country. He lived his faith, served the people, and left the world better than he found it.” The post, however, did not include any mention of the Trumps, leading to various reactions on social media platforms. Comments such as “Best photo crop of the decade” and “I immediately laughed when I saw this image” resonated with many users, highlighting the contentious political backdrop between Harris and Trump after their 2024 election rivalry.
The USA Today also noted that the Carter Center, which hosted the funeral, omitted Trump from a series of shared images, further fueling speculation about the intentionality behind their absence in significant tributes.
As the nation mourns Carter, who passed away at 100 on December 29, his funeral served as a unique intersection of political figures and the profound impact he had on American society, further complicated by the ongoing political divides reflected in these moments.
