ATLANTA (AP) — The matchup between the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to a winter storm. The NBA announced this decision “to prioritize the safety of the players, fans and staff due to the severe weather” affecting the region.
The league confirmed that a rescheduling date will be disclosed at a later time. The Rockets had already arrived in Atlanta prior to the announcement. The storm brought significant snow and ice to the area, with forecasts indicating that roads would likely refreeze overnight.
In addition to the game postponement, power outages surged across the Atlanta region, affecting over 110,000 customers primarily due to fallen trees on power lines. The adverse weather conditions have also led to widespread flight cancellations and delays at the world's busiest airport.
Notably, on the same day, a Delta Air Lines jet bound for Minneapolis had to abort its takeoff, injuring four passengers. Although the incident unfolded amid the snowstorm, authorities have not definitively linked the situation to the weather conditions.
All 201 passengers, along with two pilots and five flight attendants aboard the Boeing 757-300, were safely evacuated using inflatable slides, with one passenger subsequently hospitalized and three receiving minor treatment at the airport.
