For the second consecutive time in his career, former 49ers general manager Trent Baalke is facing intense backlash from fans, as an aerial protest was organized demanding his firing from his current position as general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars. This public outcry comes after Baalke's tenure, which began in 2021 after serving an interim role in 2020, has not yielded the desired results.
Prior to the Jaguars' game against the Titans, a plane flew over the Jacksonville stadium with a message directed at owner Shad Khan: “SHAD—FIRE BAALKE! FOR DUVAL!” The protest highlights widespread dissatisfaction among fans, suggesting that this sentiment is not limited to a few affluent supporters. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, there are “questions on the status” of Baalke's position moving forward, particularly in light of a recent contract extension negotiated with star tackle Walker Little, which may have bought him some time.
The frustration from fans stems from the Jaguars' disappointing 4-12 record. While Baalke has succeeded in some high-stakes draft picks, such as quarterback Trevor Lawrence, receiver Brian Thomas Jr., and running back Travis Etienne Jr., his mid-round selections have often missed the mark, coupled with a lack of impactful free-agent signings.
This season's protest echoes a similar action taken by New York Giants fans, who also used banners to express their dissatisfaction. Baalke seems accustomed to this type of scrutiny; during his tenure with the 49ers from 2011 to 2016, he faced his own protests, including a banner reading, “Jed, you reap what you sow. Fire Baalke.”
Historically, Baalke's pattern of tenure suggests that Jacksonville fans might have to endure one more season, since he managed to remain in his role for six full seasons with the 49ers before his dismissal shortly before the 2016 season finale.
