The Vatican has released guidelines allowing Italian gay men to enter seminaries, provided they adhere to a commitment of celibacy.
These guidelines state that sexual orientation should be considered only one aspect of a candidate's character during the selection process.
While clarifying this new stance, the guidelines do not alter the Church's official teaching regarding homosexual tendencies being “intrinsically disordered.”
Implementation of these guidelines follows a history of conflict within the Church regarding the acceptance of gay men in the priesthood.
Adopted by the Italian Bishop’s Conference and approved by the Vatican, these regulations will be tested over a three-year period.
