Brooklyn Businessman Pleads Guilty to Illegal Donations in Eric Adams Campaign Scandal

NEW YORK — In a significant development in the ongoing corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Erden Arkan, a 76-year-old real estate magnate from Brooklyn, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy related to illegal campaign contributions. He admitted to knowingly violating campaign finance laws by reimbursing employees of his construction firm, KSK, for donations made to Adams’s 2021 campaign.

During the federal court proceedings, Arkan remarked, “When I wrote the checks, I knew the Eric Adams campaign would use the checks to apply for public matching funds,” acknowledging the illicit nature of the contributions. This plea marks him as the first individual to admit guilt amid a broader indictment that implicates Adams in bribery and illegal foreign donations. Prosecutors are armed with substantial evidence, including emails and recordings that link Arkan to a Turkish government official in the orchestration of these illegal donations.

The indictment against Adams, which surfaced in September 2023, alleges that he solicited donations from both Arkan and the Turkish official during a dinner event. Following this, Arkan's employees contributed between $1,200 and $1,500, only to be reimbursed later, a practice referred to as straw donations. These contributions were intended to exploit the city’s public matching funds program, further complicating the legal proceedings.

Arkan's ties to the Turkish community were scrutinized, especially after federal agents searched his home and that of Adams’ chief fundraiser. Despite the legal turmoil, Mayor Adams maintains his innocence, stating that the accusations will not influence his ability to lead the city. “I will fight this case with every ounce of my strength and my spirit,” he stated.

As it stands, Arkan is scheduled for sentencing in August and may face penalties including restitution of $18,000, up to five years in federal prison, and financial fines. Meanwhile, Mayor Adams awaits his trial, set for April 2024.
