Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100, after transitioning to hospice care in February 2023.
The official cause of death remains unconfirmed, but skin cancer is a possible factor, given Carter's history with Stage 4 melanoma.
He was diagnosed with melanoma in 2015, which affected his brain, but advanced treatments led to a temporary elimination of detectable cancer.
Carter, who expressed peace with his mortality, had previously noted his radiation exposure during military service, which may have contributed to his health issues.
His funeral will take place in Washington, D.C., with further observances in Atlanta and a private burial in Plains, Georgia.
