England flanker Sam Underhill is on track to miss the upcoming Six Nations tournament as Bath Rugby announced he requires ankle surgery. The injury occurred during a match against Northampton on Sunday, adding to England's growing injury concerns

.

Bath issued a medical update stating, "Sam Underhill will undergo surgery to rectify a new ankle injury," with no specific timeline for recovery mentioned (AP News).

The 28-year-old has had a tumultuous recent history, having missed the Rugby World Cup in 2023. Since then, Underhill has re-established himself as a key player, starting in every game during the autumn series and scoring tries against both South Africa and Japan. However, past ankle issues have already set him back this season, sidelining him from the opening autumn tests against New Zealand and Australia.

This latest setback compounds the challenges faced by head coach Steve Borthwick, who is already without wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso due to a dislocated shoulder, alongside full-back George Furbank recovering from a broken arm. Fortunately, flanker Ollie Chessum is nearing a return from knee injury, and scrum-half Alex Mitchell has fully recovered from his neck injury.

Borthwick is set to name his squad for the Six Nations on Tuesday, with the tournament opener against defending champions Ireland on February 1.
