Norwich City winger Borja Sainz has been handed a six-match suspension and fined 12,000 pounds ($14,800) by the Football Association following an incident where he spat at an opponent during a Championship match against Sunderland on December 21. The FA confirmed Sainz’s punishment was imposed after he admitted to the charge related to his actions against Sunderland defender Chris Mepham, which occurred in the second half of the game that ended in a 2-1 defeat for Norwich.

After the announcement, Sainz apologized for his actions, reiterating that spitting at an opponent is “completely out of character” for him. He stated, “I deeply regret my actions and take full responsibility,” emphasizing his disappointment in himself for letting down his teammates, coaches, and fans. The 23-year-old also extended his apologies to Mepham directly and expressed his sorrow for the incident.

Sainz, who is currently the top scorer in the Championship with 15 goals, and his team, Norwich, will face Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup on Saturday, as they look to improve their position in the league, currently sitting eleventh.
