The UK government has announced a new sanctions regime designed to disrupt networks responsible for smuggling thousands of migrants annually.
The measures will specifically target Chinese manufacturers of boats and motors used by these smuggling operations.
Interior minister Yvette Cooper emphasized that the sanctions aim to profit from gangs that put lives at risk.
Foreign minister David Lammy confirmed that the UK will be the first country to develop legislation targeting irregular migration and organized immigration crime.
The proposed sanctions are expected to include asset freezes and travel bans for individuals linked to people-smuggling.
