France charged Isaac Steidl, the founder of the adult website Coco.fr, on January 9, with serious offenses related to sexual crimes, including his connection to a mass rape case where a husband recruited others to assault his heavily sedated wife. Prosecutors outlined that the site, which has been controversial since its inception, aided and abetted numerous heinous acts.

Steidl was taken into custody earlier in the week and faces multiple charges, including administration of an online platform facilitating illegal transactions by an organized gang. His site, described as a "den of predators," was shut down by French authorities in June 2024 amidst increasing concerns over criminal activities associated with it.

Dominique Pelicot, the man at the center of this disturbing case, exploited the platform between 2011 and 2020 to lure potential attackers, exploiting its anonymous chat feature named "A son insu" (Without their knowledge). Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in prison for orchestrating the assaults, and the case has since prompted widespread public outrage and discussions about male violence and accountability.

Steidl, an Italian national, is now under judicial supervision with a €100,000 bail requirement and a travel ban. He faces charges that include complicity in drug trafficking, possession and distribution of child pornography, and aggravated money laundering. Many of these offenses could lead to up to ten years of imprisonment each.

The website had been operational without registration for users, which allowed for anonymity and facilitated many reported crimes, with Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau stating that over 23,000 offenses have been reported related to Coco.fr. Law enforcement agencies have seized more than €5 million linked to accounts across several European nations, further illustrating the extensive network of crime associated with the platform.

As the investigation continues, there have been other arrests related to the case, including two site moderators. The shocking details have reignited discussions in France and beyond regarding the treatment of sexual crime victims and the systems in place to protect them. Gisele Pelicot, Dominique's former wife, notably waived her anonymity in an effort to bring focus to the societal issue of sexual violence, declaring that she wants other victims to feel empowered to speak out.
