KYIV, Jan 10 - In a significant escalation of ongoing hostilities, Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched a coordinated attack with 72 drones overnight. Despite the barrage, Ukrainian defenders successfully intercepted 33 drones; however, 34 drones went untracked, eluding interception before reaching their targets. The northern region of Chernihiv experienced the impact of five drones that caused injuries to one civilian. Notably, one intercepted drone fell on a building in Kyiv but fortunately caused no casualties.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage captured the chaos during the attack, highlighting explosions and fires engulfing parts of the capital. The persistent drone strikes from Russian forces have become a routine threat, aiming to overwhelm Ukraine's air defense capabilities amid nearly three years of warfare.
In a simultaneous development, Moscow accused Ukraine of striking a supermarket in the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, claiming that the missile attack resulted in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to two more. State media indicated that a U.S.-supplied HIMARS missile was implicated in the assault, as reported by Reuters.
While Ukraine has not issued a swift response regarding this incident, unverified images surfaced online depicting significant damage near the impacted supermarket, identified as Moloko. Pro-Moscow officials confirmed the event's authenticity corroborated by video footage showing the moment of impact.
Denis Pushilin, a Russian-backed regional leader, pointed fingers at the Ukrainian military for the morning strike that also led to damage of nearby buildings and numerous vehicles. The escalating violence between these two nations continues to unfold with serious implications for civilians caught in the crossfire, highlighting the grave situation within the region.
