Galagodaatte Gnanasara, a controversial monk and ally of ousted president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was sentenced to nine months in prison.
He was convicted for insulting Islam and inciting religious hatred during a 2016 media conference.
This is his second imprisonment for hate-related charges, following a previous presidential pardon in 2019.
The Colombo Magistrate's Court emphasized citizens' right to freedom of belief under the Constitution.
Gnanasara has filed an appeal against the court's sentence and faces additional imprisonment if he does not pay a fine.
