A powerful winter storm has severely impacted over 80 million people across the southern United States, causing hazardous travel conditions with heavy snowfall and icy roads. The storm, which has already dumped significant amounts of snow in states such as Texas and Oklahoma, moved eastward, prompting states of emergency in Arkansas, North Carolina, Georgia, and several others.
As of Friday, many areas were experiencing up to a foot of snow, especially in northern Arkansas, where accumulation reached near ten inches in Little Rock, which typically averages less than four inches annually. This unique weather event has led to school closures for millions, with children enjoying rare snow days from Texas to South Carolina.
The National Weather Service warned of continued snow and freezing rain across the Carolinas, Virginia, and parts of the Tennessee Valley. Travel conditions remain treacherous, as sleet, snow, and ice have made driving hazardously slippery.
Governor Sarah Sanders of Arkansas mobilized the National Guard to assist stranded motorists, while numerous other governors followed suit. In Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency. Flights from major airports, particularly Atlanta’s Hartsfield–Jackson, have faced numerous cancellations and delays; reports indicated over 4,500 flights were affected on Thursday alone.
As the storm progressed, reports of injuries also emerged. Four passengers were injured after a Delta Air Lines plane aborted its takeoff in Atlanta due to adverse weather conditions, with local authorities confirming one hospital visit among those hurt (Time).
The polar vortex responsible for this cold snap has become a subject of concern among meteorologists, who note that such occurrences are increasingly frequent in a warming world. This winter weather coincides with wildfires in southern California, starkly contrasting with conditions across the southeastern states.
With winter weather persisting, officials continue to caution against unnecessary travel. The storm is expected to maintain its icy grip as conditions worsen overnight into Saturday.
