Meta is assessing the implications of discontinuing fact-checking on its platforms within the European Union, according to a French government minister.
The company recently announced a shift from professional fact-checking to user-generated "Community Notes", mirroring a format used by Elon Musk's X.
French digital minister Clara Chappaz reported that Meta assured compliance with EU regulations and is conducting an impact study.
This study aims to evaluate the effects on users and maintain high standards in moderation, as required by the EU’s Digital Services Act.
Meta has submitted its risk analysis to the European Commission, although a timeline for changes in Europe has yet to be established.
