George Santos, the former congressman, has won a delay in his sentencing on federal fraud charges, moving it from February 7 to April 25.
Judge Joanna Seybert described the postponement as a "one-time courtesy” to allow Santos to raise the estimated $580,000 needed for fines.
Santos admitted to committing fraud, including identity theft and deceiving voters, leading to a plea deal with a minimum two-year sentence.
His legal team argues he needs more time to develop his podcast, Pants on Fire, to help pay the fines, though prosecutors criticize this claim as “speculative”.
Santos, who was expelled from Congress, claimed he has only $1,000 in liquid assets, despite earning over $800,000 since leaving office.
