Gary Hall Jr., a three-time Olympic swimmer renowned for his achievements, has suffered a devastating personal loss due to the ongoing Palisades wildfire in Los Angeles. In a recent interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Hall Jr. shared a harrowing account of the calamity, stating, “It was worse than any apocalypse movie you’ve ever seen, and 1,000 times worse.” The wildfires have created a scene of chaos and destruction, leading to the loss of both his home and an impressive collection of ten Olympic medals, including five golds, three silvers, and two bronze.
Reflecting on the experience, Hall recounted the panic as he spotted flames heading towards his home: “I was on the phone with my daughter... I saw the flames erupt and houses start popping.” He noted the quick evacuation process, during which he managed to grab his dog and a few personal items, but did not have time to collect his treasured medals. He lamented, “Did the medals burn? Yeah, everything burnt. It’s something I can live without.” The Olympian emphasized the necessity of rebuilding, remarking that all material possessions are ultimately just "stuff."
Hall Jr., who represented the U.S. at the Olympic Games in 1996, 2000, and 2004, has also been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes since 1999. His father, Gary Hall Sr., also an Olympic medalist, adds depth to the swimming legacy in the Hall family. Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist Hall Jr. After the wildfire, which has wreaked havoc on the Pacific Palisades area, the fundraiser has garnered considerable support, raising over $36,000 to aid in his recovery.
As the dust settles, Hall Jr. reflects on the emotional journey ahead, stating, “It’ll be a range of emotions, particularly when it’s time to go back to where the house stood.” He pondered if he would be able to find anything worth saving, questioning whether he might discover remnants of his medals amidst the ash. The memories and emotional scars from this devastating incident will undoubtedly shape his path forward.
