Nearly 400 prison inmates from California have joined the fight against wildfires in Southern California, working alongside approximately 2,000 firefighters.
The incarcerated firefighters volunteer through the Conservation (Fire) Camps Program, receiving payment for their contributions to firefighting efforts.
Participants must have no more than eight years left on their sentences and cannot have committed certain serious crimes to be eligible.
Inmates earn between $5.80 and $10.24 per day, doubling wages in 2023, plus additional pay for emergency responses.
So far, the wildfires have impacted over 45 square miles and led to numerous evacuations and fatalities.
